The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has unearthed two illegal plastic manufacturing units producing plastic bottles for soft drinks after melting non-food grade and chemical contaminated bottles.

The operation was led by PFA Director General Captain (R) Muhammad Usman in the metropolis here on Thursday. The authority took into possession 1,000,440 kilograms plastic granules (dana), 25000 plastic bottles and 1600 kilograms broken bottles during the raids. PFA officials conducted raids on the tip-off PFA Vigilance cell against Riaz Bottle and Jameel Plastic Bottle (production units) in Lahore.

Muhammad Usman said that the chemical contaminated and rusty bottles were being recycled for refilling of beverages after crushing and melting in poor hygiene working environment. He said that usually, bottles supplied to different juice and cola drink manufactures. It is pertinent to mention here wasted bottles had purchased from different scrap shops at a fairly cheap price.

He said it is posing a serious threat to the users' health. DG further said that food business operators can get benefit from the consultancy of PFA regarding food grade packing. He added that food authority is taking all necessary steps to curb food adulteration in Punjab as per the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar.

Meanwhile, the Authority in collaboration with Shalimar Hospital organized an awareness camp on "Balanced Diet Leads to Healthy Life" in hospital's OPD.

PFA Director General Captain Muhammad Usman(R), Shalimar Hospital Chief Operating Officer Brig Dr Muhammad Naseem Ijaz(R) and Deputy Medical Director Dr Gul Afshan visited the camps to review the arrangements. They have asked people about the facilities which were being provided to them at camps. On the occasion, a number of nutritionists, doctors and officials of both organizations were present.

A number of banners were displayed in hospital premises on which inscribed different awareness messages regarding a balanced diet. PFA's nutritionists also distributed handouts and public service message among more than 1,000 visitors. Nutritionists' spoke to as many as 500 people about the dietary guidelines after their complete medical examination and nutrition counseling session.
